Does Teletherapy Really Work?

(Spoiler alert) YES!

Teletherapy, or psychotherapy delivered via telecommunications technologies such as a phone, tablet, laptop computer, or other web-enabled device, has been shown to be effective for many populations and presenting problems / symptoms.

According to an article published in The Monitor on Psychology, a publication of the American Psychological Association, psychological research investigating teletherapy has been underway for over 60 years, with consistently positive results. The COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns presented researchers with a golden opportunity to dive deeper into the research on video-based therapy specifically.

They found what mental health investigators have consistently found in therapy outcomes research: therapy tends to be helpful for the majority of people who commit to the change process, regardless of whether services are received in person or through phone or video.

Are there limitations or downsides to video therapy? Absolutely, but there are always limitations to therapy. We’ll go over several of the pros and cons of video therapy in another article.

For now, rest easy knowing that if you are committed to changing your life for the better, decades of research on veterans, adults, children, teens, people with depression, PTSD, eating disorders, anxiety, stress, and many other conditions and complaints have regularly demonstrated that video-based therapy services are a reliable way to get the help you need!

In fact, most studies have found that video therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy, and you get to meet with your therapist from anywhere that is private and convenient for you without sitting in traffic to get there.

You’ll still need to look for a therapist that is a good fit for you, that helps you feel safe and comfortable, and has experience with the kinds of concerns you are interested in addressing. At Greenline Psychological Services, our clinicians have years of experience not only helping our clients through difficult issues, but also doing so using technology.

The video platform we use here at GPS, TherapyPortal (TherapyNotes on our end), has been used by thousands of mental health professionals for years and is safe/private, and easy to navigate. It's like Zoom but with better privacy protection for discussing sensitive topics, built in payment so you don't have to bring your card to every session, and your therapist can share their screen with you if there's an interesting resource they want to show you during a video session.

Therapy should be helpful and as convenient as possible. Video therapy offers both: effectiveness, and convenience. See your therapist when it’s convenient for you (e.g., before or after work, on your lunch break, after putting your kids to bed, etc.), and get the help you need.
